How to Gain Weight

Obesity is rapidly growing to become one of the most serious problems in the United States today. The problem is especially strong among children. Recent reports indicate that there is such a trend of obesity among children, that within ten years the majority of all children will not only be obese, but the health problems associated with that obesity may place a strain on our healthcare system. Because of these reports, its hard to imagine that some people might actually have a problem gaining weight. While it may be hard to imagine, the truth is that many people actually do suffer from this rare problem.

For people who are underweight it can seem to be just as difficult to gain weight as it is for people who are obese or overweight to lose weight. Being underweight can lead to a number of serious health issues, particularly is the problem is related to some type of eating disorder such as anorexia or bulimia.

The first step in treating any type of problem associated with being underweight is to insure that there are no other underlying medical problems that could be the trigger. Certain diseases, such as cancer and even some hormonal disorders can cause a person to lose weight. In some cases, the weight loss may occur rather rapidly. In the event that there are any other medical conditions present, those must be diagnosed and treatment program began. If there are no underlying medical conditions or if there are, once they are under control, the person can then begin a treatment process that will allow them to gain necessary weight in a healthy manner.

This is accomplished by taking in more calories than the body extends in a typical day. It is important to take into account the amount of exercise or physical activity that you get in a day in order to know how many calories your diet should consist of. The presence of sufficient fats and proteins are also an important part of any weight gain plan; however, it’s not a good idea to try to gain weight by eating foods that are greasy or contain high amounts of sugar or starch. This can cause other health problems. High calorie foods should consist of healthy foods such as fish, nuts, poultry, organic meats and plenty of water.

Many physicians recommend increasing your daily eating regimen from three large meals to six small meals that contain the right balance of foods from all the essential food groups. In some cases, protein powders and shakes may be recommended to act as dietary supplements for weight gain. These can be mixed with water or fruit juice.

Because being underweight can cause tremendous health problems, it’s usually a good idea to make sure that you are taking a good mineral supplement and multivitamin.

Individuals who are underweight should not stop exercising; however, the type of exercise they perform may be reconsidered. For example, weight training tends to increase muscle mass; whereas many other types of programs are better focused for people with the goal of losing weight, rather than gaining it. Finally, don’t forget that steroids should never play a part in your weight gain program. They can cause serious, and even deadly, health problems.
