Hair Loss Treatment Options

If, like many men, you have been considering some of the commercial solutions available to hair loss, you should take the time to investigate which products work and how they work before you waste significant amounts of time and money. As you probably know, most of these products are promoted with slogans which lead consumers to believe they are capable of actually regrowing hair. Is that possible; however? And if so, which products really do work and which ones are nothing more than a smoke screen?

Today there are three primary treatment solutions available for purposes of hair restoration. These approaches include medication, surgery and cosmetic solutions.

There are a number of treatment products on the market, some of the most well known of which include Rogaine for Men. This product, and others like it contain a solution of minoxidil. This medication was originally developed to treat high blood pressure; however, it was found to have a curious side effect of re-growing hair, although no one is quite sure why. Typically, minoxidil tends to work best on individuals who are between the ages of 18 and 49. In addition, if your hair loss began quite some time ago, this product may not work as well for you. The product must be used twice a day and requires about four months before hair regrowth is noticed.

Surgical procedures have been around for far longer than you might actually imagine. Some of the first experiments concerning surgical restoration of hair were actually begun in the Orient in the 1930’s; however, it was not until 1950’s that Western medicine began to experiment with these techniques. Since the 1970’s, hair restoration surgery has been widely used to treat hair loss. Over the years, the techniques used in hair restoration surgery have dramatically improved and are now suitable for women as well. The level of surgery which you require is highly dependent on the extent to which your hair loss has proceeded at the time of your surgery. In some cases, multiple surgeries may be required. The two main types of surgery options are scalp reduction and hair transplantation.

It should be noted that while hair transplant surgery has proven to be successful in numerous cases, most hair transplant surgeons will admit that this options is not capable of completely restoring your hair; however it can be a good option if you want to reduce the look of baldness. You should also know that once your hair has reached a certain level of loss, hair transplant surgery may not be a feasible option, as you must have a sufficient amount of hair left in order for this procedure to work effectively. In these cases, scalp reduction may be the best option. This procedure uses the removal of sections of balding or bald slap; after which elastic devices are placed under the skin in which to actually stretch the sections of the scalp that still contain hair. Once again; however, it must be noted that this procedure will only work if you still have some hair.

The final treatment solution available for hair is actually not a treatment option at all but rather a cosmetic solutions. These options include hairpieces and cover-up cosmetics.
