Guide to Healthy Eating
Most people realize that healthy eating is an important essential to maintaining an ideal weight as well as overall health, but are unsure as to what exactly constitutes healthy eating. There are numerous advisories on the subject, so it can be difficult to weed out the truth from popular myth.
In its most basic essence, healthy eating involves a variety of foods such as protein, grains and even fats and sweets. This wide variety can come in the form of meat, eggs, dairy, vegetables, fruits, pasta, breads, etc.
If you are prone to choose convenience over quality, you may find it difficult to obtain healthy meals. There is no doubt that some planning is required in order to eat healthy. The first step in getting started toward a healthier eating plan is to look at the typical and most common foods that you now consume and ask yourself why you make the choices you do. It’s also important to look at the number of servings from each food group you typically eat per day and determine whether you are getting the recommended number of servings from each.
You may find it helpful during this process to keep a diary of everything you eat and drink for a period of time, at least one week. Your diary should include information such as serving sizes and specifics regarding what you eat and drink. At the end of your study you should be able to determine whether you are eating a variety of foods from each main food group and whether you are getting an overall average minimum number of servings each day. The important key here is to not focus so much on getting the minimum number each day but to average it out over the week.
Once you have completed your study and determine which nutrients you may be missing in your current eating plans, it is time to determine which changes need to made in order to assure that you are getting the nutrients you need. Depending on what you discover, it may be that you only need to make a few changes in order to get your diet up to par. On the other hand, you may find that you need to drastically overhaul your eating plans.
The most common discovery for most people is not getting enough fruits and vegetables. This can be solved by adding a serving of one or the other at each meal or slipping a fruit in with a snack. You can also add these essential foods in by adding a cup of juice or adding a salad to your daily diet.
It’s a good idea to continue your food diary even as you make changes to your diet to insure that you are getting the essential nutrients you need with the changes you make.
