Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is a condition that results in muscle pain as well as pain the soft tissues of the body. This can result in such symptoms as problems sleeping and a reduction in energy. In very severe cases, symptoms of fibromyalgia can make it difficult to continue with a normal work and home life. The good news is that while fibromyalgia can be quite painful, it does not cause any permanent damage.
More specifically, fibromyalgia is actually a syndrome. This means it consists of a set of symptoms that occur simultaneously. Researchers are not sure at this point what causes fibromyalgia. There is some evidence that fibromyalgia could be related to sensitive nerve cells; however, some researchers also believe that it could be related to chemicals present in the brain that are not in balance.
Other common symptoms of fibromyalgia include the presence of many different points in the body that are especially tender or painful when pressed upon. In some cases, the pain related to fibromyalgia may become so painful that it can cause disability. Other, less common symptoms include headaches, trouble concentrating, irritable bowel syndrome, stiffness in the morning, depression and anxiety.
With a condition such as fibromyalgia, the symptoms may not be present all the time. They can come and go, with flare ups that may be followed up by periods of lesser intensity. In some cases, there may be no symptoms present at all. At times, symptoms may be affected by weather conditions such as cold or damp weather. Periods of stress or over-activity may also cause symptoms to grow worse.
Fibromyalgia can be diagnosed in one of two ways. In the event that a person experiences pain that is widespread on both sides of the body, the doctor may suspect the presence of fibromyalgia. The presence of at least eleven or more points on the body that are sore or tender when pressed may also indicate the presence of fibromyalgia.
It is important to note that there is no cure for fibromyalgia. It is possible; however, to control and treat the symptoms related to this syndrome. Treatment methods can vary from one person to the next. Research has shown that regular exercise can assist with aches and stiffness while medication may help with the relief of pain as well as improve sleeping problems. In thee event that the symptoms associated with fibromyalgia causes anxiety and depression, counseling may be advisable. Counseling can also help with the reduction of stress, which can trigger symptoms of fibromyalgia.
Other treatments that can help include massage, acupuncture and behavioral therapy.
