Why are people so quick to diagnose you these days and say you have a chemical imbalance

One in particular has been found repeatedly, and thats an elevation in the levels of the enzyme monoamine oxidase A. Studies have found that not only high-activity variants of the MAO-A gene but high levels of the MAO-A enzyme itself have been associated with major depressive disorder (Meyer et al., 2006, 2009; Schulze et al.......

Answer:
Maybe you are schizoid (extreme shyness) with anhedonia.

You could get a book called "Shyness: What it is and What to do about it" by Phillip Zimbardo at the library or a book store and work on your social skills. Social skills can be learned, even though to a lot of people it seems to come naturally.

Answer:
I agree with you that labeling every unwanted thought and feeling as pathological, giving patients wrong diagnoses, and overmedicating psychiatric patients are problems. And I think that you have a point in saying that the pharmaceutical company seems to be over-hyping psychiatric diagnoses and medications. However, I disagree with what you say about depression having nothing to do with a chemical imbalance of the brain. I'm not too familiar with the research on the biology of anxiety disorders, so I won't comment on that, but I know that several "chemical imbalances" have been found to be associated with clinical depression. One in particular has been found repeatedly, and that's an elevation in the levels of the enzyme monoamine oxidase A. Studies have found that not only high-activity variants of the MAO-A gene but high levels of the MAO-A enzyme itself have been associated with major depressive disorder (Meyer et al., 2006, 2009; Schulze et al., 2003; Du et al., 2002, 2004; Dannlowski et al., 2009).

Does this mean that everybody with clinical depression has an abnormally high level of MAO-A in their brain? No, but it does mean that clinically depressed individuals tend to have higher levels of the enzyme than mentally healthy individuals. Does it mean that there aren't psychological and social causes of clinical depression? Again, no. As I said, not everybody with clinical depression has too much MAO-A in their brain, and there is evidence that psychological and social factors play a role in the development of depressive disorders. I don't think you're wrong in saying that a "bankrupt culture" is a cause of depression and anxiety, but I certainly don't think that it's the only cause. I think that saying that "chemical imbalances" are the only cause of depressive and anxiety disorders is arrogant and misguided, but I think the same can be said of individuals who say that psychological and social factors are the only cause of these conditions.
