Possible orthostatic hypotension

2011-07-05 | From: | Authon: Hit:

I dont know if it helps but I think Im hypoglycemic as well, since I have a lot of the symptoms and my father is one. I was just wondering if its worth it to go to the doctor. I would prefer not to go if possible, for personal reasons. Would they give me any medication to fix this or would they give me the home remedies that dont always work?......
I am a 17 year old girl. I seem to fit all of the symptoms; I get dizzy and blurred vision if i get up too fast. There has only been one occasion where I nearly passed out. Sometimes I will have a headache for several days, or even a week. I don't know if it helps but I think I'm hypoglycemic as well, since I have a lot of the symptoms and my father is one. I was just wondering if it's worth it to go to the doctor. I would prefer not to go if possible, for personal reasons. Would they give me any medication to fix this or would they give me the home remedies that don't always work? I've had the symptoms for years, but this year it has gotten progressively worse. Any input would be appreciated so thank you!

Answer:
Well you see its worth while to investigate orthostatic hypotnesion. There may be something you can do to stop it in its tracks.

Usually its hard to give direct advice as there could be an underlying illness causing it. They will most likley put you on a tilt table test to confirm that you indeed have this condition. After which they may check your hormones through a 48 hour urine test. This will see if your adrenal glands and kidneys are producing the necessities to get proper blood circulation around your body.

Allot of teenage girls have this condition, it can be due to dehydration and lack of salts so they may also do a very small (10ml-15ml) blood test to check electrolytes, thyroid, kidney function, blood sugar level and rule out anemia.

If everything underlying checks out and your not passing out then its highly unlikely that they will put you on medication. They may suggest you take some salt tablets or advise you about a higher intake of salty foods.

Again it depends on the diagnosis. So many things can cause orthostatic hypotension! However the chance is more then likely that it will be idiopathic. Under those circumstances it should go away by itself in 10-15 years time.

All the tests to confirm that you have orthostatic hypotension are very safe and minimally invasive (blood test). You should get diagnosed, its important to know whats happening to your body!

Answer:
