I'll be 21 in a couple weeks and I had my blood pressure taken for a job fitness test. It was high then (like 160), then I took it at walmart and the systolic pressure was 148 (stage 1 hypertension) and diastolic pressure was 82 (2 above normal) with a pulse of 64. In the past year I gained 50lbs of muscle and went from 145lbs to 195lbs (5'11''). I take supplements but have been off of them for a while now and doubt they have any of those ingredients that raise your blood pressure. I lift about 4 times a week with cardio and swim one day a week. Any ideas why my blood pressure is high?

Daniel is correct in his advice. Also, if you were not sitting totally quiet for at least 10-15 minutes before your blood pressure was taken, the numbers are not accurate. Your most accurate blood pressure is first thing in the morning when you wake up. Sit on the side of the bed, no talking, before you get up to pee and see what your blood pressure might be (if you purchase a blood pressure monitor). This will be your basal blood pressure to which all other numbers will compare. The increased weight may have something to do with your blood pressure, whether it is muscle or fat. Heredity may be a factor - do your parents have high blood pressure and are they on medication for it? If it remains high consistently, consider making an appointment with your family doctor to discuss this. And, every time you have your blood pressure checked, write it down so you can take it to your doctor's appointment (if you make one)

I hope I know my stuff - ER nurse for 25 years. The top number needs to be monitored, the bottom number right now is insignificant. You don't want to lower your sodium too much because then, it will cause muscle weakness and cramping and, if severely low, can cause heart arrhythmias. Let a doc help
